Meaning of Nyepi Day

 Meaning of Nyepi Day

The 2022 Nyepi Day will be held on March 3, 2022. The Nyepi ceremony usually lasts for 24 hours from six in the morning until six in the morning the next day.

During the Nyepi ceremony, Hindus in Bali do not carry out activities, such as traveling, not working, lighting fires or electricity, and only focus on getting closer to God.

Quoted from Bulelengkab.go.id, The meaning of Nyepi Day is to preserve nature and motivate Hindus ritually and spiritually so that nature is always a source of life.

When performing the Nyepi Ceremony, Hindus make a request to God to purify Bhuana Alit (human realm) and Great Bhuana (the universe) is also to release the greedy traits inherent in humans (Tawur Kesanga).

Therefore, during Nyepi, nature is given the opportunity to rest.

Nyepi Day Series

Before and after Nyepi, there are a number of rituals performed by Hindus. The following is a series that is carried out during Nyepi Day.

Melasti Ceremony

 Meaning of Nyepi Day

The Melasti ceremony is carried out four or three days before Nyepi and is carried out by praying together facing the sea. Hindus believe that the sea (water source) is the water of life, which can restore self-purity.

This ceremony aims to purify oneself by dissolving all kinds of dirty thoughts, words, and actions. This ceremony is equipped with offerings as symbols of the Trimurti, namely Lord Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. Also Jumpana, the throne of Lord Brahma.

Tawur Kesanga or Mecaru

Tawur Kesanga or Mecaru is usually done exactly one day before Nyepi Day. Tawur Kesanga activities are synonymous with festivals ogoh-ogoh in Kuta Bali.

Ogoh-ogoh is a giant doll with a spooky shape made of paper pulp and a bamboo frame. At the end of the parade, the doll will be burned as a symbol to eliminate human vices.

Seclusion Day

During Nyepi Day, Hindus have taboos or chess brata loneliness, namely:

1. Very Geni: Do not light a fire including cooking. Hindus perform upawasa (fasting)

2. Observe the Work: Not working (removing the senses)

3. Observe Lelungaan: Not traveling (resting the body)

4. Observe Auction: Not looking for entertainment or fun.

During Nyepi, the atmosphere in Bali will be like a dead city that is quiet, lonely, without lighting. Therefore, during Nyepi it is not only Hindus who do it. Tourists who are in Bali must also obey and respect these rules.

Ngembak Geni

The Ngembak Geni procession is carried out by visiting relatives to forgive each other. One of the traditions on Ngembak Geni day is to perform rituals Med-field or Omed-omedan, namely the ritual of kissing each other in turn. This ritual is carried out by young men and women in Bali and is believed to be able to resist evil.
